A fan of the series since 1995, Koriander runs the popular Moon Sisters fan site and studies the Sailor Moon franchise closely.
The 1992-1997 Sailor moon The animated meta series is iconic for very valid reasons. It was a show that showed us that girls can be funny, question everything, be scared, get angry, and still be as valid as a superhero as traditional male heroes. It normalized LBGTQ characters and relationships, reversed the storyline on gender roles, and still entertains fans every year with its mix of action-packed storytelling and humor.
But he also had his faults. From filler episodes to blatant disregard for the manga’s source material at the end of season three, there are a few issues that still make fans moan.
But for manga purists, there was Sailor Moon Crystal, which from the second season on has become so close to the manga, you can hold the books on screen and go panel for panel with very minor changes to standards and practices. Now the series has hit the big screen in Japan with its fourth season split into two theatrical films like Sailor Moon Eternal, and fans of the manga have every reason to be excited.
Here are just three main things Crystal and Eternal fix that ’90s anime broke.
Rei Hino / Sailor Mars
In the 1992 Sailor moon anime, J-Pop idol Michie Tomizawa was chosen for Rei. The masculine side of Toei Animation’s staff noted that the singer was not afraid to speak her mind and had a fiery, fiery personality.
So because of that, they chose to make Rei a complete kid, because if you’re a girl and you say what you think, something’s wrong, right?
This crazy, scheming boy Rei spends the first season being a direct bully of Usagi, starting fights, making her cry, insulting her and in episode 17 she even tries to stop Usagi from meeting. a famous photographer because she wants to control how Usagi will act with a boy she doesn’t even know. (The DiC voiceover tried to explain that he was a student at his school, but Rei attends a girls’ school.)
And that’s not all, she forces Mamoru into dating situations he’s noticeably uncomfortable with, a trend that continues even until season three when Rei interrupts a date between Mamoru. and Usagi, just so she can torture Usagi.
Fortunately, aside from two episodes of season three where she playfully teases Usagi, Rei in Sailor Moon Crystal isn’t the hot-headed bully we see in the ’90s anime. Instead, she’s calm, thoughtful, and more like a Usagi sister than anything else. She doesn’t harass Mamoru and she is one of the more mature characters on the show.
The Amazoness Quartet
Debuting halfway Sailor Moon SuperS, the Amazoness Quartet consisting of Ves Ves, Palla Palla, Cere Cere, and Jun Jun were a team of bubbly girls in age-inappropriate costumes (albiet with leggings added in the 90s) who made Zirconia’s evil offerings. and Queen Nehellenia. But while the girls were popular enough to get their own line of dolls and stuffed animals, they had flaws.
In a stark contrast to the manga, Palla Palla is seen as childish and stupid. Crybaby with the brains of a four-year-old, her countertops seem more accidental than her manga counterpart, which called blows and had more gem power than her sister-in-arms.
Another shocking change is that these girls only share two episodes with the Amazon trio, albiet shrouded in shadows and portrayed as their rivals. This was not suitable for manga enthusiasts, as the Trio are actually meant to be the girls’ pets in human form.
But the worst change of all was the omission of their true roles as Sailor Guardians, which came along with the idea that the girls had simply chosen to follow Queen Nehellenia, while their manga counterparts were actually awake too. early in their sleep, kidnapped, brainwashed. and used as Queen Nehellenia’s soldiers until Super Sailor Saturn helps them free themselves.
Sailor Moon Eternal corrects all of these flaws, reestablishing the girls ‘story, Palla Palla’s intelligence, and the girls’ powers, allowing them to come out of the second film as Sailor Chibi Moon’s own team, much like the Inner Guardians and exterior belong to Sailor Moon.
Chibiusa Tsukino / Sailor Chibi Moon
Chibiusa debuted 14 episodes in Sailor Moon R with very little in common with its manga counterpart until the last episodes of the season. The ’90s version first made her an unholy terror, intimidating Usagi and turning her friends and family against her. It wasn’t until very late in the season that we learn that Chibiusa is only taking action because she’s here to save two different timelines of the Black Moon family while also dealing with around 895+ years of her realm, which is her realm. gives the impression that everything was her. fault, turning her into a self-destructive black lady.
On his return to Sailor Moon S, she is now Sailor Chibi Moon, but just like her father Tuxedo Mask, her powers are severely slowed down to the point that she is a back-up comic sidekick. Chibiusa finds herself constantly tortured by enemies of the day, then in a complete slap the writers completely omitted her from the final fight, while her manga counterpart returned from the dead to help her mother fight Master Pharaoh. 90.
In SuperS, we see some emotional growth for Chibiusa, but not without her being groomed by Pegasus, whose emotional manipulation causes her to hide vital information from her parents and in Episode 159, even sneaking into a visually interlude. questionable with a see-through version of the Princess Serenity dress. Besides using the gold crystal to blast Nehellenia and her using her mother’s attack in the SuperS movie, Chibiusa earns very little and is just treated as a fashion accessory for Sailor Moon.
Sailor Moon Crystal changed all that.
Season two sees an emotional but much nicer Chibiusa who focuses on rescuing her mother. When she becomes Black Lady, she is much more powerful than her male comrades and poses a higher threat to the Sailor Guardians, even going so far as to kidnap and kiss with her own father. (Granted, it’s disgusting, but it follows the manga.)
This second season not only ends with her becoming Sailor Chibi Moon, but acquiring all of the same powers as Sailor Moon, which she uses to travel alone to the ends of the galaxy so that she can help her. mother to defeat Wiseman.
At the end of the third season, Sailor Chibi Moon invented her own powers, died, returned, found her own holy grail, became Super Sailor Chibi Moon, and fights Master Pharaoh 90 and Mistress 9 on the same level as his mother. .
Sailor Moon Eternal picks up with Chibiusa gaining even more power, becomes Eternal Sailor Chibi Moon in the second film, gains her own crystal separate from her mother’s silver crystal, saves Helios and acquires a secondary princess form, again, separating her from the shadow of his mother once and for all.
Just fixing these six girls Sailor Moon Eternal and Sailor Moon Crystal upgrade the series in a major way.
