Joe Biden dropped an executive order from President Trump that required new federal buildings to be constructed only in beautiful classic styles.
The order was an attempt to stop the tendency for government buildings to be brutalist soulless concrete boxes (see above), rather than constructions reminiscent of buildings in ancient Athens and Rome.
The ordinance noted that the Founding Fathers “wanted American public buildings to inspire the American people and encourage civic virtue” and that “they sought to use classical architecture to visually connect our contemporary Republic to the history of democracy in the United States. classical antiquity, reminding citizens not only of their rights but also of their responsibilities in the maintenance and sustainability of its institutions. “
Trump’s order stressed that “new federal building concepts should, like the beloved iconic buildings of the United States, enhance and beautify public spaces, inspire the human spirit, ennoble the United States, arouse the respect for the general public and, where appropriate, respect the architectural heritage of a region. “
America was in real danger of seeing buildings become beautiful again. Thank goodness Biden stepped in.
As we have already pointed out, the Brutalist and Deconstructivist styles have been adopted in the United States and even in Europe, where classical buildings are demolished and replaced by giant and ugly monstrosities that sap the spirit.
Leftists celebrated the suppression of order, arguing that classical architecture is fascist, that art isn’t necessary in modern democracies, and Trump really wanted to make climate change worse … or something. kind:
With cognitive dissonance on max, some have even argued that classical architecture is “ugly”:
