Epidemiologist Dr Michael Osterholm, who has joined Joe Biden’s Covid-19 advisory board, has warned Americans to “prepare” as he expects cases to continue to rise and wants a nationwide lockdown for fight against the pandemic.
Biden’s adviser said the ‘darkest months’ were ahead for Covid-19, due to winter driving people inside, and fatigue and disaffection affecting their willpower to respect the sanitary directives.
These factors, according to Osterholm, will likely drive the daily case numbers to a new high.
“Be ready. We’re going to hit 200,000 or more cases a day, and we need to prepare in our hospitals,” he told MSNBC’s Morning Joe program on Monday.
The United States has broken daily records several times over the past few days, including Saturday, when it recorded 128,000 new cases.
Osterholm believes that a national lockdown is needed to “drive this level of infection to a place where we can actually control it.” However, he admitted, compliance is key. “If you survey 50 people, you get 75 definitions of what a foreclosure is,” he said.
Citing the success of contact tracing in China and elsewhere, Osterholm said the United States had failed to tackle the pandemic.
If the government were to impose a nationwide lockdown, the country should help tackle the “economic pain and suffering” that comes from the inability of people to work and businesses forced to shut down by allowing the borrowing of “money. to ourselves ”to“ pay people lose their jobs, ”he said. “It would be a very different kind of lockdown, where people wouldn’t suffer.”
The United States currently has more than 10.1 million cases of Covid-19 and has so far recorded more than 238,000 deaths from the virus.
