WILMINGTON, DE – Election day for Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden stops in Scranton, Penn. was as sentimental as it was strategic.
This was where Biden learned disciplined work as a child. And, on Tuesday, it was the city he hoped would help secure state dominance against President Donald Trump.
After an introduction by Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), Biden thanked the volunteers through a megaphone, becoming nostalgic for his roots and reiterating his mission to “restore the soul of the country” and to restore “decency and l basic honor to whites. House.”
In the afternoon, he left for Philadelphia to visit the National Constitution Center, another symbolic trip that subtly translated his promise to rebuild what has frayed in American society under Trump.
Biden’s campaign made reclaiming Pennsylvania a top priority in the general election, a point reinforced by the decision to devote the final hours of his candidacy to it. Many polls indicate a very close race, with Biden just ahead.
During an early afternoon information call with reporters, Biden’s campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillion expressed confidence in her team’s electoral approach on the battlefields, noting that she expects them to perform well in several Midwestern states.
“As you know, we think Pennsylvania is a place where we are far away and we feel very good about the turnout already that we are seeing statewide today,” she said. .
O’Malley Dillion covered lightly, acknowledging that campaign officials didn’t technically see it as a must-win, similarly grouping it with larger transport like Florida.
“We can win 270 electoral votes even without Pennsylvania and Florida,” she said.
She spent part of the virtual conversation figuring out other ways to get the number of votes Biden needs to win the presidency. “Without Pennsylvania and Florida, we still crossed that threshold of 270 with Arizona, or North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin and our ‘protecting’ states,” she said.
“So, very strong position. Our goal is to keep pushing in all of these states, we feel so confident about the way we have.
On the track Monday, Biden was determined to convince enough voters in another city, Monaca, that Trump is just bad for them and that he has a better way out of the mud. He used words like “courage” and described middle-income households as “America’s backbone”.
While the best substitutes pointed to other hot spots, Biden remained focused on price.
“Pennsylvania matters,” he says.
