“Four days before the election. As Stormy Daniels once said, “Let’s get it over with,” “Bill Maher joked Friday night.
After his monologue, the Real time the host welcomed his longtime pal Al Franken to the program for an interview. Franken, of course, is the former SNL The comic became a Democratic senator from Minnesota who resigned on Jan. 2, 2018, after a number of women accused him of unwanted touching and kissing. Maher has defended Franken on several occasions on his program, downplaying the allegations against him and reframing them as a single “incident” in which he acted as a “high school student”.
That incident – involving a kissing sketch, a creepy photo and right-wing celebrity Leeann Tweeden – did indeed contain a number of inconsistencies, according to a detailed report from The New YorkerIt’s Jane Mayer. But what Maher and a number of other liberals fail to realize is that Franken has been charged with more than this incident of unwanted kissing and touching – including a damning allegation where Franken attempted to kiss. by force an aide to the Democratic Congress following a recording of his radio show in 2006.
“He was between me and the door, and he was coming towards me to kiss me,” the aide told Politico. “It was really fast, and I think my brain had to work really hard to be like, ‘Wait, what’s going on?’ But I knew what was going on wasn’t right, and I dodged. I was really surprised by that, and I kind of booked him towards the door, and he said, ‘It’s my right as an artist.’ (Franken denied that this happened.)
So it’s strange that Maher has Franken as the main guest of the evening on his HBO program on the eve of the 2020 presidential election, as Democrats attempt to take down a man accused of sexual misconduct by more than 20 women. Why?
“You are one of the few Liberals the military loves… You’ve played a lot of USO shows, you’re welcome, they trust you, they love you. What is your assessment if they should get involved? Maher asked Franken what would happen if Trump refused to leave the White House.
“Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Milley will take him out,” Franken replied.
At this point, one would expect a transition in the allegations against Franken – given that the Tweeden incident allegedly took place during a USO tour – but Maher refused to address the gigantic elephant in the room, giving instead his boyfriend pass an unsavory behavior and whitewash his past.
Towards the end of their awkward conversation, which saw Franken stumble over several jokes and Maher berating him for being “rusty,” the host asked the question, “How can we get back to normal?”
“That’s a very good question. The answer is, we probably can’t, because there are two universes of information, ”Franken suggested, before citing his books on Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. “It wasn’t for Rush, Trump wouldn’t have been in there.”
Well one way we could try back to normal is not giving anyone – Trump, Franken, you name it – a pass on the impropriety allegations.
