We all have some essential clothes. In summer my wife wears her Mott & Bow cropped t-shirts and Birkenstock Gizeh sandals. In colder weather, her feet live in her Everlane Glove boot. Etc. Next we have me, who can swap my TOMS TRVL LITE sneakers for a boot, but except for dog days in summer, I’m often found wearing a Buck Mason Field-Spec Cotton Surplus Crew shirt.
And I’m going to reveal to you the secret of why I wear this shirt so often over the four seasons: I like it. Many. Ah, but why? Well, three reasons. Let’s give everyone their due.
First off, it’s comfy – the Field-Spec crew is made from heavy cotton that looks a lot like a 1960s or ’70s sports jersey, if you can use that as a point of reference. ) I’ve worn it both with a t-shirt underneath (plus a jacket) and no undershirt for hours and the thing is as comfortable as any clothing I own. The fit is just loose enough not to snag and certainly not to restrict movement, but it still isn’t baggy.
Second, it’s versatile – I’ve worn this shirt over shorts and sandals, jeans and boots, under down jackets and casual blazers, and it still looks in place. It’s definitely a casual shirt, but you can dress it up with nice jeans or the right pants. It’s the best layer for wowing friends at the bar, walking the dog, hitting the golf course with frisbee, and more, finally it’s durable – after multiple washes my Field-Spec shirt still looks great. Its color is not faded and it is not worn or deformed, but it is softer and more comfortable than ever. And all of that is good news, because with the colder weather to come, this thing gets into the rotation even more heavily.
