A The California distribution center of Fashion Nova – the Instagram-friendly clothing brand promoted by Kylie Jenner, Khloe Kardashian and Cardi B – has reported 203 cases of COVID-19 in the past two weeks, making it the third largest epidemic ongoing throughout Los Angeles County.
The company’s ‘super-fast fashion’ warehouse in Santa Fe Springs, Calif., Is located just behind the Palmdale site of defense technology firm Northrop Grumman, which reported 334 cases, and a Smithfield site. , which reported 569, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health COVID-19 Database.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health did not immediately return requests for comment on whether there had been any hospitalizations or deaths associated with the outbreak. The 15-year-old company, founded in Los Angeles in 2006, has made a name for itself in low-cost clubwear. The brand has found its niche on the internet in recent years, mainly on Instagram where it has more than 10 million subscribers. In 2017, Women’s Wear Daily reported that the company was ranked alongside Gucci and Louis Vuitton among the most sought-after fashion companies of the year. CEO Richard Saghian told the outlet that the company grew 600% that year.
An important part of the company’s marketing strategy is its “Ambassador” program, or partnerships with highly-followed influencers who tag the company in online posts. Kylie Jenner, Khloe Kardashian, Cardi B, Saweetie, Megan Thee Stallion, and Amber Rose regularly post pictures in the company’s iconic skin-tight clothing. On their website, Fashion Nova lists 75 ambassadors, including Cassie, Young Miami of City Girls, and Teyana Taylor. Of the 30 top ambassadors contacted by The Daily Beast, none responded to comment on the outbreak.
Cardi B, who has a custom line with the company called Party with Cardi, has helped solidify Fashion Nova’s popularity. The rapper mentioned the company in the lyrics and mixed the brand’s dresses into her wardrobe, alongside Balenciaga shoes and other expensive pieces. In December, Cardi B – who has otherwise been an advocate for universal healthcare – apologized for hosting a large Thanksgiving rally without a mask. She later picked up the heat after sharing photos from an equally large and not socially distant birthday party for her husband, Offset. (Kylie and the Kardashians also took a lot of liberties, including a party for Kim Kardashian’s 40th birthday.)
“During this covid-19 period, they make us work knowing that there have been 10 people tested positive for covid-19 and continue to be more and more so over the weeks.“
In May, a user of the recruitment site Indeed.com wrote a one-star review of the warehouse in Santa Fe Springs. “During this covid-19 period,” wrote the user, who claimed to be an “inventory associate” and current employee, “they put us to work knowing that 10 people have tested positive for covid -19 and continue to be weeks. “
In 2019, an investigation by the Federal Ministry of Labor found that the brand’s clothing was sewn by workers with illegally low wages. The investigation, which began in 2016, found that factories affiliated with Fashion Nova owed a total of $ 3.8 million in back wages to hundreds of workers, according to the report. The New York Times.
A source told the Times that the seamstresses in some of these Los Angeles stores, which often operate undocumented labor, were only paid $ 2.77 an hour. Fashion Nova’s general counsel dismissed the allegations.
