Sheldon Adelson, the transnational casino mogul who is also well known as a GOP megadonor and great promoter of Israel, has passed away. He was 87 years old.
News of his death, broken by his wife of over 30, Dr Miriam Adelson, followed reports of the casino mogul who owns hotels and casinos in Las Vegas and Macau receiving cancer treatment. . Sheldon was President and CEO of Las Vegas Sands, the publicly traded casino company he founded.
Former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura were quick to issue a statement offering condolences to the surviving family of Adelson.
In a lengthy statement announcing his death, his wife recounted his many business and charitable activities, as well as how his efforts have helped shape the course of several countries, including the United States and Israel.
Read the full statement below:
It is with unbearable pain that I announce the death of my husband, Sheldon G. Adelson, from complications of a long illness.
Sheldon was the love of my life. He was my partner in romance, philanthropy, political activism, and business. She was my soul mate.
For me – as for his children, grandchildren and legions of friends and admirers, employees and colleagues – he is absolutely irreplaceable.
Much has been written and said about how Sheldon, the son of poor immigrants, reached the pinnacle of business success through strength and genius, inspiration and integrity. It was an all-American entrepreneurial story. When Sheldon started a new business, the world watched with anticipation.
In our incredible 32-year adventure together, I’ve been fortunate to witness the beauty of Sheldon’s private side.
He was an American patriot: a veteran of the United States military who gave generously to wounded warriors and, wherever he could, looked to the advancement of that great United States. He was the proudest of the Jews, who saw in the State of Israel not only the fulfillment of a historic promise to a unique and deserving people, but also a gift from the Almighty to all mankind.
And Sheldon was nice. He willingly gave of his fortune to charitable causes that can literally be countless, as he did not expect any credit and often preferred anonymity. Although stunning in construction and speech – and, over the past two decades, plagued by a painful illness – Sheldon has always been sensitive to the needs of others.
Visit one of our hotels and you will immediately notice the extraordinarily high ceilings, superbly designed by Sheldon at the cost of lucrative space. He wanted all of our guests – whatever their means – to feel like royalty, to breathe freely in magnificent tranquility. When the COVID-19 crisis hit and these hotels turned dark, he insisted that our tens of thousands of team members continue to receive their salaries and medical insurance.
Each of these people, and millions of other recipients of Sheldon’s largesse, are his testimonies.
But he went beyond improving the lives of individuals: he shaped the course of nations. Some of the historic changes he helped bring about – in the United States, Israel and elsewhere – are known to the public. Others are not. For Sheldon, recognition of his own indispensable role was irrelevant. What mattered was that the good be done. He cared about standing up for what was right, even if it meant being alone.
The end of her ideal day was in the company of family and friends, not statesmen or celebrities.
Sheldon and I grew up on the coast: him in Boston, me in Haifa. Together, we crossed the oceans, pushed back the Pearl River Delta to help develop Macau’s future, recreated the canals of the Venetian Lagoon in Las Vegas. To me, Sheldon had a power, a depth and a mystery like the sea. His dedication lifted me, like waves, through challenges both personal and professional.
And now he’s gone. The supporting waters disappeared towards the sky. Only a vast dry seabed remains. The loss is colossal.
Goodbye, my darling, my only true love. After having won and given so much, you have earned this rest.
Democrats and the mainstream media will use all violence to create a new Patriot Act to attack our guns. Hold on tight!
