In one of the most absurd post-covid developments, the Chinese aviation regulator last week recommended that cabin crew on charter flights to high-risk Covid-19 destinations – such as the United States – reduce the risk of infection when using the toilet.
Their solution: use disposable diapers. The notice, first reported by Bloomberg, was published in a 38-page list of guidelines for airlines to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China said the recommendation applies to charter flights to and from countries and regions where infections exceed 500 per million people. According to the latest data, this would include most countries, and certainly the United States where the official number is around 4,400 cases per 1 million population on a continuous 7-day basis.
In addition to wearing diapers, the dispatcher suggests that cabin crew use personal protective equipment including:
- Medical protective masks
- Double Layer Disposable Medical Rubber Gloves
- Protective glasses
- Disposable caps
- Disposable protective clothing
- Disposable shoe covers
So far there is no requirement for cabin crew to wear hazmat suits, although we assume the global panic is not abating, it is happening too. The regulator also said the flight crew should wear masks and goggles, but they don’t need diapers.
Other tips for flights include dividing the cabin into “clean zone, buffer zone, passenger seating area and quarantine zone”, separated by disposable curtains. The last three rows should be designated as an emergency quarantine area, the CAAC said. The CAAC declined to disclose further details on the guidelines.
While the Chinese aviation market was hit hard at the start of the outbreak in Wuhan, it has since recovered to approach pre-pandemic levels as cases in China remain ridiculously low, even though diseases are said to do seemingly unrelenting in other regions like Europe and the United States struggling to bring Covid-19 under control.
