A crowd of 1,000 anti-Trump protesters kicked, punched and thrown an inflatable doll with President Donald Trump’s face on it through the streets of Philadelphia on Saturday as networks called the 2020 race for Joe Biden.

It is disturbing because symbolic violence leads to real violence. pic.twitter.com/m3o9PrGggl

The night before, Joe Biden – presumed president-elect the next day – said:
We may be adversaries, but we are not enemies, we are Americans. No matter who you voted for, I’m sure of one thing, the vast majority of them, almost 150 million Americans who voted they want to squeeze the vitriol out of our politics. We’re definitely not going to agree on a lot of issues, but at least we can agree to be courteous to each other. We have to put anger and demonization behind us. It is time for us to come together as a nation to heal. It won’t be easy, we have to try.
This message did not appear to have filtered through to some of his supporters, who engaged in street protests despite public concerns about the coronavirus and the crowds.
