Cuomo dismisses accusations he covered up nursing home deaths – Dateway

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has dismissed claims he concealed deaths at state-run COVID-19 nursing homes, arguing that the state Department of Health reported the numbers in their entirety, but that the situation had been “politicized”.

Cuomo said the New York State DOH “has always publicly and reported all COVID deaths in nursing homes and hospitals,” but admitted, however, that his administration “should have provided more ‘information faster’, referring to the request of the Federal Ministry of Justice last . for new coronavirus mortality statistics.

“I take responsibility for it,” the governor said at a press conference on Monday. “The total number of deaths was always accurate, nothing was withheld from anyone, but we created a vacuum. And it created pain. And I feel very bad about it.

Cuomo has faced a serious backlash following his order for state nursing homes to accept COVID-19 patients and those with similar symptoms. The governor defended his decision, saying that because of the risk of secondary infection, “the elderly should not stay in hospital longer than necessary”. He went on to say that another reason was that he was about New York’s health care system overtaking.

“COVID has not entered nursing homes by people coming from hospitals. COVID entered nursing homes by staff entering the nursing home, ”Cuomo said.

He admitted, however, that “we should have done a better job”, adding that it created “confusion, cynicism and pain for the families of loved ones.”

Last , his secretary, Melissa DeRosa, reportedly told Democrats in New York that the COVID-19 nursing home deaths were by local officials because they believed the DOJ could “use the data against us.” On top of that, the New York attorney general’s office reported in January that the state’s health department underestimated coronavirus-related deaths in nursing homes by 50%.

At the height of the outbreak of the pandemic in the first half of 2020, New York was one of the hardest hit COVID-19 areas.

The state had around 18,000 people in hospital at the height of the COVID-19 outbreak and around 800 people were dying every day from causes related to the virus. According to the latest data, 8,330 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the state and 136 deaths as of Sunday.

Around the world, the COVID hoax is dissipating as major governments cancel programs and illness and death trigger a massive backlash.
