So, that worries that the minimum wage has been removed from the relief bill, and that clearly does not (at least now) have 50 votes in the Senate for $ 15. I still think there will be a minimum wage bill passed by this Congress in some form or another, but obviously it would have been great to see it jump off the street. It also seemed a bit unnecessary to cut benefits like the Senate did, but that’s what it took to get Joe Manchin’s vote. This is the Senate.
But don’t let these setbacks do too much to diminish this bill’s huge victory for progressive politics. That’s a lot of money – more, in some cases, than what the entities were even asking for. Conservatives have pointed out, for example, that the bill is routed to schools about five or six times what the Centers for Disease Control deems necessary to make schools safe from COVID.
The right says it is a terrible thing. I do say! Because that is the real point of this bill. It’s not about fighting the pandemic or restarting the economy, although those are the two things. It’s about changing the way we think about the economy. Come out with austerity and worry about future deficits and try to gain non-existent Republican support. With public investment and helping people. Yes, just say it: more free stuff!
