Did Bill Fucking Barr just save American democracy ?!

I never thought I’d ask this question, but how good Attorney General Bill Barr prevent going out the door? Suddenly, on Monday, Barr dealt a blow to not one but two big Trumpian plans.

Regarding the appointment of a special advocate to investigate Hunter Biden, Barr said he “Appointed” a special advocate, if there had been a need. In doing so, Barr “drove a wooden stake into the heart of the idea,” writes curator Ed Morrissey. Barr’s comments make it nearly impossible for Deputy Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen to do so (at least, if he cares about his reputation at all). And Barr categorically said there was “no basis at this time for seizing machines by the federal government” – a stern rebuke to advice Trump received from his newly pardoned former national security adviser Michael Flynn , who claimed Trump could do just that. (Along similar lines, Barr also sided with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s conclusion, which Trump later challenged, that Russia was behind the recent cyberattacks.)

It’s a remarkable heel-to-face turn from Barr just before the credits roll. Since his introduction as a character in Trump’s screenplay, Barr has presented himself as a sycophant. He replaced Jeff Sessions – a true Trump believer whose only weakness was a loyalty to the rule of law that outweighed his otherwise stingy loyalty to Trump. The sessions have rightly withdrawn from the Russia inquiry; in doing so, he infuriated Trump, who was looking for his own “Roy Cohn”.
