DR. FAUCI DISCUSS COVID-19 VACCINE TRIALS: Dr. Anthony Fauci of the NIH sits down for a virtual conversation with the Washington Post to discuss the challenges of battling the COVID-19 pandemic. In an interview with CBS News yesterday, Dr Fauci said he believes “help is on the way” in terms of accessible vaccines. Just this morning, the University of Oxford announced the results of its preliminary vaccine trials in partnership with drug maker AstraZeneca. Large-scale trials recorded an efficacy rate of 70.4%. AstraZeneca will seek emergency clearance in Europe and Brazil. This month it became the third major vaccine candidate to report positive first results. While apparently less effective than the Moderna and Pfizer vaccine trials, both of which reported over 90% effectiveness, AstraZeneca’s vaccine would require much simpler storage than the other two. These first results give hope that several candidate vaccines could become available worldwide. Nine other major drug makers are in the midst of Phase 3 vaccine trials, and more than 50 more trials are in the early stages of testing. Dr Fauci recently told the New York Times: “I said I would be happy with a vaccine that was 75% effective. Aspirationally, you would like to see 90, 95% of it, but I didn’t expect it. I thought we would be good, but 94.5% is very impressive. More than 12.2 million Americans have been infected with COVID-19 and at least 256,837 have died. Although the United States only makes up about 4.2% of the world’s population, it is home to about 21% of all infections. »Subscribe to NowThis:» Sign up for our KnowThis newsletter to get the biggest stories of the day straight to your inbox: #AnthonyFauci #Coronavirus #Vaccine #NIH #News #NowThis #NowThisNews Connect with NowThis »Like us on Facebook:» Send us a tweet on Twitter: »Follow us on Instagram:» Find us on Snapchat Discover: NowThis is your first press briefing which provides you with all the videos you need to stay up to date on the latest new trends.
