New York Republican Tom Reed is under investigation by the House’s ethics committee after a former lobbyist said he groped her drunk in 2017.
Reed, who is married and 20 years older than the woman, initially said the report was incorrect. Two days later, he apologized, saying he would neither challenge Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo nor run for re-election in the House.
“Simply put, my behavior caused her pain, showed her disrespect, and was unprofessional. I was wrong, I’m sorry, and I take full responsibility, “Reed said in a March 21 statement. He noted at the time of the misconduct that he “struggled” with alcoholism and was treated that year and admitted that he is “powerless” in alcohol. ”
The ethics committee investigation, announced Friday, comes after Nicolette Davis told the Washington Post that when she was a 25-year-old lobbyist on a fundraiser in Minnesota, a drunk Reed was sitting next to her in an Irish pub and she was the one Rubbed her back, loosened her bra with his hand outside her blouse, put his hand on her thigh and moved him up. Davis asked for help from someone seated next to her and he pulled Reed away from the table and out of the pub, she told the Post.
“The committee is aware of public allegations that representative Tom Reed may have committed sexual misconduct that violates house rules, laws or other standards of conduct,” said a statement from the house’s ethics committee.
