Maybe it’s the quarantine months, or maybe the fact that Matt James is, if we’re being honest, the first truly swoon-worthy bachelor we’ve had in years – but whatever the reason. This season of the dating franchise is already off to a very promising (and sexually charged) start.
This season transports us from Palm Springs – the site of the recently closed Clare Crawley and Tayshia Adams joint Bachelorette season – at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Pennsylvania. (So, at the very least, we can expect less back sweat this season.) But that doesn’t mean things aren’t ready to heat up. In fact, it looks like some of the competitors are already pretty hot and messed up.
Two contestants – including one who calls himself “Queen Victoria” – literally stumbled upon themselves at the sight of this season’s Bachelor. A woman, Katie, showed up with her vibrator – which the producers dutifully scrambled with a black censorship box – and left it on the coffee table during Matt’s impromptu prayer. Another asked to put his “balls” in his mouth before giving him meatballs. And another, Kaili, showed up in nothing but lingerie and a dress so she could ask James which dress she should wear. The single person is back in action, baby!
But pent-up excitement aside, Matt’s season is a long-awaited milestone for the franchise as the first black male actor – a mantle that comes with some serious pressures. This franchise has struggled with the breed since its inception, and a black bachelor’s degree alone is not enough to repair that legacy, although it is a start. Matt was candid with franchise host and designated fatherly love guru Chris Harrison as the two discussed the pressures James feels in the post.
“People want you to end up with a certain type of person,” said the 29-year-old real estate broker, reflecting on his upbringing as the child of a white mother and a black father. “It’s something that kept me awake at night. It’s like, “I don’t want to piss off black people; I don’t want to piss off white people. But I am both! How to please everyone? “
Matt also admitted to struggling with intimacy in the past, noting that in the past he had walked away when things got too serious. Now he says, “I’m done running.” So let’s bring in the ladies!
As always, this season has assembled a menagerie of women whose tactics for gaining the bachelor’s affection range from a normal, heartfelt conversation to, in Katie’s case, interrupting another candidate named Mari’s conversation with Matt – about worrying about his family in Puerto Rico – tapping his competitor with his vibrator. (For example, literally tapping; Katie later gushed about being able to “boop a contest queen over the shoulder with a dildo,” which she swears she washed. Hopefully!)
This season features some really interesting women like Magi, an Ethiopian pharmacist, and Abigail, who made franchise history as the first Deaf contestant. But as always, there are also agitators like “Queen Victoria”, who in large Bachelor tradition, “stole” Matt from two conversations, much to the chaos of his fellow students, while also encouraging others to embrace his fervor for chaos as well. (Plus Cynthia Rowley’s daughter is here ?!)
Matt has visibly seen through theaters, giving his first pink impression on a visibly elated Abigail. Understandably, some contestants worried that they wouldn’t have enough time with Matt before the rose ceremony – and many weren’t happy with their more cheeky, time-stealing counterparts. But in the end, James’ Night One’s eliminations were pretty much anticipated – including, sadly, keeping Victoria around, almost certainly at the behest of a producer.
“But as always, there are also agitators like “Queen Victoria”, who, in the tradition of the big bachelor, “stole” Matt from two conversations, much to the chagrin of his comrades, while encouraging others to embrace his fervor. for chaos as well. “
Before this season, some Bachelor The diehards wondered how Matt would perform, given that unlike most of the more recent high school graduates, he has never appeared on any of the franchise’s shows – or anywhere on television, for that matter. (Matt’s friendship with Tyler Cameron, a fan favorite contestant of Hannah Brown’s Bachelorette season, likely allowed her to skip Clare Crawley’s season, as originally planned, straight to Bachelordom.) Some viewers naturally wondered why the show’s producers would ignore Mike Johnson, another beloved contestant of Hannah’s season which seemed like a more obvious choice to play the lead role. as the franchise’s first Black Bachelor. And as with all less experienced contestants, there’s a distinct possibility that Matt could be overly influenced by the show’s producers.
But so far Matt has shown all the traits of a strong bachelor’s degree: unlike our last bachelor’s, Peter Weber, who seemed bound to create and exacerbate drama among his candidates, Matt seems to have a clearer idea of What he wants. (At least for now.) He seems serious about finding love and anxious to find a relationship that will actually last. At worst, Matt could be the kind of bachelor whose season is relatively boring compared to villains like Juan Pablo Galavis, whose seasons are akin to slow-motion car crashes. But as the season preview reveals, there’s plenty of drama – and new contestants – to come.
