When Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters on Tuesday he believed there would be “a smooth transition to a second Trump administration,” experts pointed to his slight smirk to suggest he must have been joking .
So when Pompeo followed up this shocking disregard for American democracy with an appearance on Fox News later that day, presenter Bret Baier directly asked him, “Were you serious there?”
Unsurprisingly, Pompeo responded with a deliberately evasive response, telling Baier, “We will have a smooth transition and we will see what people ultimately decide when all the votes have been cast.” He pointed to the constitutional process that describes “how voters vote,” adding that “whoever is in office at noon on January 20 has all the tools available so we don’t jump for a moment with the ability to keep Americans. sure.”
Of course, a week after polling day all the votes have been “cast,” it’s the tally that continues with margins of victory for Joe Biden in several states that are statistically insurmountable for President Trump.
Baier, who followed his own network’s advice in calling Biden the “president-elect” at the top of the interview, then asked Pompeo if the Trump administration’s refusal to accept the election results could hurt to the country from a national security perspective.
Responding to the many foreign leaders who praised Biden, Pompeo said, “Make no mistake, we have one president, one secretary of state, one national security team all at once.”
But while the segment may have started with Baier asking semi-tough questions about the US chief diplomat’s dangerously undemocratic rhetoric, at the end of the day they were laughing together at Pompeo’s political aspirations.
