France must be prepared for further attacks on its soil, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin warned following a series of deadly murders in a church in France. He said the nation was fighting Islamic extremism.
“We are in a war against an enemy who is both inside and outside,” Darmanin told RTL radio on Friday. He said France must prepare for new tragedies as it struggles against “Islamist ideology”.
“We must understand that there have been and will be other events such as these terrible attacks,” warned the Minister of the Interior. He said 4,000 security guards would be stationed in places of worship across France this weekend.
France has taken its terrorist alert system to its limits following the incident in Nice, which left three dead.
Darmanin announced just two days before the attack that security operations would be stepped up at religious sites across the country due to a “very high” terrorist threat before All Saints’ Day on November 1.
The minister said at the time that France should rebel in “creeping Islamism which arms people ideologically”, while stressing that Islam would always have a place alongside other religions in the secular nation.
