Disgraced former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe faced many tough questions on Tuesday from the Senate Judiciary Committee about his actions surrounding the 2016 FBI counterintelligence investigation of Donald Trump.
During questioning, President Lindsey Graham (RS.C.) asked McCabe why the FBI didn’t act when former CIA Director John Brennan handed a note to the office detailing how Hillary Clinton concocted the hoax of collusion with Russia to politically harm Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election.
“How do you explain to the American people how the FBI received a note from the CIA alleging that Hillary Clinton had signed a plan concerning the American presidential election?” [candidate] Donald Trump and a Russian hacker obstructing the US election in order to distract the public from his use of a private messaging service, which you did nothing. Should [Counterintelligence Special Agent] Did Peter Strzok tell you about it? Graham asked.
McCabe tried to sidestep the issue by arguing that he didn’t know what Strzok or former FBI Director James Comey “thought” of this CIA memo.
“I cannot explain to you, senator, what Peter Strzok or Director Comey thought of that note at the time. What can I say, senator – “
“No, wait a minute. No no. Please I want to get into this, ”Graham interrupted, then asking why the FBI would launch a counter-intelligence investigation into Trump based on a hearsay talk about“ Russian hacking ”in a bar, but without examining the credible allegations presented by the CIA.
McCabe responded that the CIA memo contained no “criminal conduct.”
“What I am saying, senator, is that it is not clear to me that there is an allegation of criminal conduct in this memorandum,” McCabe said. “This is based on my current reading of it. I did not see him at the time.
But Graham pointed out that the FBI investigation was a counterintelligence investigation, not a criminal investigation, and therefore the CIA note should have warranted further investigation.
“So if you’re going to open a counter-intelligence investigation against the Trump campaign based on a conversation by the Australian ambassador to the UK based on a bar conversation, you tell me it’s legitimate, and you’re putting all the resources in for two and a half years to reduce that, ”Graham continued.
“But you’re telling this committee that when our own CIA suggests that Hillary Clinton signed a plan to link Trump to Russia for political purposes, you haven’t done anything.
McCabe then attempted to walk away from Clinton with his original talking point.
“I can’t, sir, explain to you what Peter Strzok or anyone else thought about it at the time, but…”
“Your own CIA informed the FBI in September that they have information that Hillary Clinton herself has signed a plan to divert attention from her email problems to Trump by linking him to Russia for political purposes.” Graham explained.
“And Mr. Strzok never told you about it, the FBI never opened an investigation, it never hired an agent. It’s really disturbing for a lot of us, ”he concluded.
