This post contains spoilers for the Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 premiere.
Uh, did that really happen? Thursday evening, Grey’s Anatomy back for its Season 17 premiere, whose promo clips promised to both tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and leave us breathless. Well, it worked, because at the end of the episode we’re up against none other than McDreamy himself, Patrick Dempsey.
The circumstances leading up to Derek Shepherd’s return are somewhat distressing: Cormac Hayes finds his Meredith collapsed in Gray Sloan’s parking lot. We see Meredith in a dream on the beach, looking at the love of her life. We’ll have to wait until next week to find out more about his condition.
Dempsey’s return is more than a little surprising. He left the series in 2015, just a year after extending his Grey’s two year contract. Explaining his delisting to Weekly entertainment at the time, the actor said, “it just evolved. It just happened. It was really something surprising that happened, and it happened naturally. Which was pretty good. I like the way it all went. ”
It all happened quickly, he said, but he wasn’t surprised. “It was just a natural progression with the way the story unfolded. It was like, Okay! It was obviously the right time.
A In touch The article alleged that Dempsey was fired because he had an affair with an intern – appalling to both Shonda Rhimes and Ellen Pompeo. Dempsey denied the allegations, and oddly enough, In touch deleted the article.
There are also Pompeo’s infamous comments to The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 on Dempsey’s refusal to negotiate together for a better salary.
“Patrick [Dempsey] leave the show [in 2015] was a defining moment, from the point of view of the agreements, ”said Pompeo. “They could always use it as leverage against me – ‘We don’t need you; we have Patrick, which they did for years … I often tried to get together to negotiate, but that never interested him.
“At one point I asked for $ 5,000 more than him just in principle,” she said, “because the show is Grey‘s Anatomy and I am Meredith Gray. They didn’t want to give it to me. And I could have walked away, so why didn’t I? This is my show; I am number one. I’m sure I felt what a lot of these other actresses feel – why should I walk away a lot because of a guy? You feel in conflict, but then you’re like, ‘I’m not going to let a guy kick me out of my own house.’ “
When the odds rose during the episode of McDreamy’s death, she added, “I had a little chuckle about it.”
But maybe there isn’t bad blood after all?
Talk with Deadline About how the idea came about, showrunner Krista Vernoff said she was looking for ways to add “fan candy” to the series to instill some joy – so why not get into the dream of Meredith and reunite her with a fan favorite?
“Patrick and I both have homes in Malibu, and we went for a hike one day,” Pompeo said. Deadline. “… And the idea hit me so I just said to him, would you consider coming over and being a part of the storytelling this season?” I know Patrick has his foundation in Maine where he helps cancer patients and cancer survivors, and it’s a huge effort on his part, and I know it’s important for him to donate too. ‘hope to people and give them joy, and we wanted to bring something to this time.
The two shot their scene together on the beach, from a distance, after testing negative for COVID-19. And Dempsey, too, was delighted with the story.
“It was really exciting and fun, and it was great to see everyone,” he said Deadline. Kevin [McKidd, who directs Episode 3] was there too, so there were a lot of familiar faces, a lot of new faces. The dynamics behind the camera had changed. ”
The best part? Vernoff hinted that we haven’t seen McDreamy’s latest either. Derek Shepherd back Greyand Meredith maybe on the brink of death? Pinch me, I’m in 2007 again!
