A Florida sheriff’s deputy found a missing 13-year-old girl with a man in a motel room after searching motels using clues and advice he gathered during his investigation.
Body camera footage of Volusia County MP Royce James shows how he went from motel to motel for days to ask questions about the missing girl based on advice he received from her family and of his friends.
Deputy Royce James spoke to a friend of the missing girl, who said the 13-year-old was planning to go to a motel with someone she had met online.
The little girl’s friend said the man may have picked up the 13-year-old from a Dollar General store in Oak Hill.
The friend told James that she thought the man’s name started with a T, maybe Tyler, and that he was from Orlando.
James went to Dollar General to search for security footage and found surveillance footage of the girl at the store, according to the sheriff’s office. An employee reported that the girl said she was waiting for someone to pick her up.
James then began touring motels in the area, showing reception workers a photo of the missing girl and searching for a match in the day’s tapes, MPs said.
At the third motel, James noticed a name that matched the information he had received on the suspect; a Tyler Thompson from Orlando was staying there.
When James knocked on her door several times, Thompson responded.
Footage shows a young girl running from another room into the MP’s arms and hugging him. She appeared unharmed but said her stomach was aching.
“You f ** ked up,” Deputy Minister Tyler Thompson, 22, told suspect.
Thompson has been taken into custody for interfering with the custody of the children, according to the Edgewater Police Department.
James took the girl to a local Department of Children and Families facility for an assessment and then brought her home, according to WFTV.
