On Presidents Day, hundreds of people gathered on a Florida street corner with flags and signs. But they weren’t there to celebrate the current democratically elected president, or American presidents in general. The crowd dedicated the party to Donald Trump, the twice indicted political exile who walked through the protesters in his procession and gave a thumbs up.
Trump has been out of office for nearly a month, but some of his more die-hard supporters remain mistakenly convinced that he was re-elected – or at least that he will run again in 2024. Last week, after senators acquitted the ex-president of the murderous mob incitement that attacked the Capitol on Jan.6, Trump released a statement suggesting he would come into the public eye. “Our historic, patriotic and magnificent movement for Make America Great Again is just beginning. In the coming months, I have a lot to share with you, ”the statement read.
It was exciting news for Trump’s most engaged fans. Although supporters called off pro-Trump events – some of which were believed to be violent in nature – shortly after the Capitol attack, citing fear of law enforcement, key organizers of the 6 January are back to peddle the same hoaxes and violent rhetoric.
