McConnell drives Trump-fueled ‘death spiral’ to overturn election

Calling President Trump and his allies “extraordinarily slim” electoral fraud allegations, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has made the effort to overturn the 2020 election results in his room as an existential challenge for the country that would “harm our republic forever” if successful.

Speaking from the Senate floor on Wednesday, McConnell mingled with Trump – and the 11 senators in his ranks who rebelled against his leadership by supporting a plot to twist the Senate’s superficial role in certifying the Senate. election as one last way to keep Trump in Power.

“The Constitution gives us here in Congress a limited role,” McConnell said. “We can’t just declare ourselves a national board of elections on steroids.”

Within days of Trump leaving office, McConnell broke with the president in that speech unequivocally and forcefully – something he has largely avoided over the past four years. And Trump has increasingly criticized McConnell and his deputies publicly for what he believes is a cowardly failure to defend him.

“President Trump says the election was stolen. The assertions range from specific local allegations to constitutional arguments to radical conspiracy theories, ”McConnell said. “I have supported the president’s right to use the legal system… on many occasions the courts have rejected these demands, including the judges the president himself has appointed.

The Kentucky senator warned that “our democracy will enter a death spiral” if the GOP insurgency takes hold. “Every four years it would be a rush for electricity at all costs.”
