MPs announce articles of impeachment of Trump after riot on Capitol Hill

Members of the House Judiciary Committee announced articles of impeachment of President Donald Trump.

The announcement comes after Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said in a statement that the president should be “immediately” removed from office, either by the 25th Amendment or by articles of impeachment.

Representatives David Cicilline (R-RI), Ted Lieu (R-CA) and Jamie Raskin (D-MD) wrote the articles, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Cicillin and Rep Ilhan Omar (D-MN) then tweeted the articles. “[S]o proud that everyone is co-leading this effort with us ”, Omar wrote. “We must act quickly to remove this president from office.”

Members of the House committee began writing the articles Wednesday night after a pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol and a woman died from a gunshot wound inflicted during the chaos.
