A genetic mutation in a new strain of coronavirus recently detected in the UK was first spotted in Brazil in April. Scientists in the United States have identified a new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, which is believed to be significantly more transmissible than the original based on early evidence – although it does not appear to cause a more severe form of the disease. This mutation affects the peak proteins of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which allow it to attach to human cells and enter, causing disease.
