Netflix lupine made its on-duty debut on Friday, January 8, and quickly landed the first French series on the streamer’s US Top 10 list. It came in at number 8 on the overall list and was number 6 on the US series list on Saturday before climbing to number 3 on Sunday (it’s number 1 in France and elsewhere). Netflix started sharing daily top 10 lists last February.
The untouchables‘Omar Sy plays Assane Diop, who uses the world-famous gentleman thief and master of disguise Arsène Lupine as inspiration. The French original by Gaumont Télévision is by George Kay (Criminal UK, Killing Eve) in collaboration with François Uzan (family business) and is a contemporary adaptation of the novels by the French writer Maurice LeBlanc, who created the character in 1905. The books have been adapted into dozens of television series and films over the years.
The first five-part series takes place in Paris and uses the city’s locations. Dans L’Ombre D’Arsène (In the shadow of Arsène)introduces Sy’s Diop, who as a teenager saw his life changed when his father died after being accused of a crime he did not commit. Now Diop is out to avenge his father and outsmart pretty much everyone along the way.
lupine has an 88% fresh audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the ratings that have been logged so far are glowing.
