The owners of a New York City bar have declared their business a “ self-governing zone ” in defiance of the coronavirus tyranny imposed by city and state officials.
Inspectors trying to enforce COVID rules banning indoor dining at bars and restaurants were fired from Mac’s Public House in Staten Island by owner Keith McAlarney, who says he locked the door as they walked out were withdrawing.
“One of the TLC employees asked, ‘Oh, are you closed? McAlarney told the New York Post. “I said yes.'”
“She turned and left.
There would have been nine guests inside Mac at the time, but McAlarney says he stopped charging for food and drink after the State Liquor Authority withdrew his liquor license on Friday and accepted instead. tips and donations from those who eat or drink in its establishment.
“We’re not backing down,” McAlarney said in a video posted to social media. “Do you think you scared me by saying that I don’t have a license to serve alcohol?” Well guess what? This liquor license is hanging on the wall. If this liquor license is taken down, it will be done by Cuomo. Do you want to come here and take this license off the wall?
“De Bozo, do you want to come here and take this license off the wall?” Don’t hesitate to get off eventually, and we’ll end up having a conversation before you even think of setting foot on my property. I’m not going to shirk. “
Mac owners have declared their property a “self-contained zone,” with signage hanging around the business stating, “We refuse to abide by the rules and regulations put in place by the mayor of New York and the governor of New York State. ”
Authorities have slapped the Macs with a deluge of hefty fines, but co-owner Danny Presti says they have no plans to pay them.
“At this point, we’re okay because we’re not paying it,” Presti said. “[The Sheriff’s Department] fines us $ 1,000, so they keep coming back. We are always here. We don’t let them in.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help Macs and other local businesses in their struggle to stay open.
