Ahead of the kickoff between the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers on Sunday, two Fox Sports announcers were caught on a hot mic mocking the traditional military fly-over.
“That’s a lot of jet fuel just for a little flyover,” Aikman said after four A-10 planes flew over after the national anthem sang.
“It’s your hard-earned money and your taxes at work,” Buck added.
In what many saw as an odd political endorsement, Aikman said, “That’s not what’s happening with the Kamala-Biden ticket, I’ll tell you right away, partner.
Poorly informed sports broadcasters are apparently unaware that military overflights are part of Air Force training exercises and therefore do not cost taxpayers.
“Overflights do not cost taxpayers since they are part of training missions,” Air Force spokeswoman Jennifer Bentley said in 2018. “Sometimes an overflight involves 10 minutes of a mission from 12 hours.
Overflights are also a great recruiting tool for the US military.
“Overflights are a way for the US Air Force to showcase the capabilities of our aircraft while inspiring a future generation. We are increasing the number of events eligible for support to help with recruiting efforts and tell the story of the Air Force. “
Maybe Buck and Aikman should stick to Joe Buck’s advice and “stick with the sport”.
