Prince Harry told Oprah Winfrey he decided to step down from the British Royal Family because he feared “history will repeat itself”, apparently referring to the tragic tale of his late mother Diana at age 36 in a car accident in Paris. while being chased by paparazzi.
Harry, who is now 36 himself, made the remarks in his interview with CBS which will premiere on March 7. Two extracts from the special were published Monday morning.
In one of Oprah’s new clips, Harry was sitting next to Meghan, 39, with whom he is expecting a second child. Holding her hand, he reflects on the ordeal his mother went through when she left the royal family.
“I’m really relieved and happy to be sitting here talking to you with my wife by my side,” he said. “Because I can’t imagine what it must have been like for her [Diana], going through this process all those years ago
“It was incredibly difficult for both of us, but at least we got to know each other.”
In a second clip, Winfrey told Meghan that no subject was off limits and at one point told the couple “you said some pretty shocking things here.” Oprah also asks Meghan if she was ‘silent or silenced’.
Winfrey appeared to refer to a comment from Meghan when she said the trolling she received was ‘almost insurmountable’.
The conversation was reported as the couple’s first TV interview since taking up residence in California last year, but Harry instead spoiled Winfrey’s exclusivity when he recorded an outdoor interview with a another old friend, James Corden, which aired last week.
In this interview, Harry said he was more concerned about media intrusions into his family’s life than the Netflix show. The crown, which he said was “obviously fiction”. His friend Corden did not ask if Harry’s sympathetic attitude towards the series was influenced by the $ 100 million fee the couple allegedly received from Netflix to produce content.
Harry told Corden the British press had created a “harsh environment” that was destroying his sanity, but insisted he “hasn’t strayed away” from the royal family. “It was a step backwards rather than resigning.”
He said, “I did what any husband would, what any father would do. It’s like, “I need to get my family out of here.” But we never left. He added: “I will never leave. I will always contribute. “
The series of interviews come after Buckingham Palace announced the couple will not be returning to their former roles as active royals.
