Target has reopened its looted Minneapolis store that was completely ransacked during the George Floyd riots more than 5 months ago in an effort to better meet the needs of black shoppers and be less “racist”.
According to a Bloomberg report, there is now a new ‘mural’ at the entrance to the store and it has been completely remodeled by a Somali-American woman-owned contracting company to make it more welcoming to black people.
The store will also stock more products made by brands owned by blacks.
In August, Target’s new “racial justice committee” set out a goal of responding to looting of its stores (mostly by black criminals), attacking its reputation for seducing primarily white shoppers.
One of those committee members, Stephanie Creary, assistant professor of management at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, said Target’s mission was to “reduce the impact of racism created by its operations.”
Head of External Engagement Laysha Ward said the new philosophy will be implemented across the country in building new Target stores and renovating existing ones.
“We really think about this relevant experience which is overtly black and which openly reflects the needs and culture of black people,” Ward said.
According to the report, white residents in the area previously avoided using the store, instead preferring to go to another branch further away, and called it “Tar-ghetto”.
Importantly, the store also added shutters in case of an “emergency”, that is, in case the local diverse community decides to loot it again.
In the age of mass censorship in Silicon Valley, it is essential that we stay in touch.
