Ted Cruz Grills, CEO of Twitter, Dorsey for censorship and denials of electoral fraud – Dateway

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) questioned Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey about his company’s censorship policies and called the news election fraud misinformation.

During the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, Cruz insisted on Dorsey whether he considered Twitter to be a publisher, which therefore would not fall under Section 230 protection.

“Is Twitter a publisher? No we are not. We distribute information, ”Dorsey said.

Asked by Cruz to define what a publisher was, Dorsey said, “An entity that publishes according to editorial guidelines and decisions.”

Cruz then noted that Twitter then became an editor – by Dorsey’s own definition – when it censored the New York PostHunter Biden’s story last month, but allowed the distribution of President Trump’s tax returns obtained by the New York Times – although the latter is a crime.

“In the case of The New York Times, we interpreted it as a story about pirated material,” Dorsey said.

Cruz also lobbied Dorsey over Twitter’s electoral fraud disclaimers.

“Sir. Dorsey, is there voter fraud?” Cruz asked.

“I don’t know for sure,” Dorsey said.

“Are you an expert in electoral fraud?” Cruz asked.

“No, I’m not,” Dorsey said.

“Well, why is Twitter currently putting so-called warnings on virtually every election fraud statement?” Cruz asked.

Dorsey claimed the warnings were just links to a “larger conversation,” despite Twitter having tagged or deleted more than 50 of Trump’s tweets since polling day.

“We’re just connecting to larger conversations so people have more information,” Dorsey said.

“No you are not. You set up a page that says “voter fraud of any kind is extremely rare in the United States,” Cruz noted, holding a print version of the warning from Twitter. “It doesn’t point to a larger conversation, it takes a contested political stance, and you’re the editor when you do that.”

“You have the right to take a political position, but you cannot pretend that you are not a publisher and get a special advantage under Section 230 as a result,” he added.

In all, Dorsey said in her opening testimony that Twitter had tagged 300,000 tweets related to voter fraud since October 27.

Cruz had already hammered Dorsey in another Judicial Committee hearing last month on Twitter censorship of the New York Post’s Hunter Biden story.

“So, Mr. Dorsey, your ability is that you have the power to force a medium – let’s be clear, The New York PosIt’s not just some random guy tweeting, ”said Cruz. “The New York Post has the fourth highest circulation of any newspaper in America. The New York Post is over 200 years old, founded by Alexander Hamilton. And your position is that you can sit in Silicon Valley and demand from the media that you can tell them what stories they can publish and you can tell Americans what reports they can hear.
