The far right made me the false face of the DC insurgency

WWhen the insurgents stormed the Capitol, I was sitting in my Brooklyn apartment in my pajamas, following a live Twitter feed. At one point I started receiving messages that someone accused me of being a prominent QAnon activist who had been photographed during the riot. As someone who has written on the far right for years and had been the subject of their conspiracy theories before, I shrugged my shoulders.

Then I started to receive more messages. This time old friends – college classmates, even ex-girlfriends – to see if I was okay. It slowly dawned on me that the tweeter was no ordinary deranged person, but a famous and unhinged person: the deceptive lawyer Lin Wood, who worked on the Kraken trial and had over a million followers. Threats naturally followed and Wood’s tweet was posted in the New York Times as part of a story debunking false claims that the antifa secretly stoked right-wing violence.

Wood’s Twitter was quickly suspended, but not before publication, at least the last time I took a screenshot, 28,000 retweets, and 47,000 likes. For days, social media and right-wing blogs have, repeating Wood’s claim, declared that I am, in fact, QAnon activist Jake Angeli. Nicknamed “Q Shaman,” he’s known for his distinctive attire – including plastic horns and Halloween eye-catching face paint – and high-octane rants against a supposedly Satanic “deep state” and pedophile. Angeli has tattoos on her arm and chest, while I don’t, and he’s over a decade younger than me, as evidenced by my bulging middle-aged mid-height to his muscular physique. . While Angeli, who was arrested on Saturday, had complained strongly of being hailed as an ‘antifa’, rather than receiving her due as the winning Q pillar, none of this was was enough to keep the talk about my supposed role in this conspiracy.
