While Europeans and Americans worry about the freedoms they are giving up by staying unvaccinated, it’s clearer to Indonesians as the government threatens to fine anyone who says no to a COVID shot.
Reuters reports that Jakarta is threatening residents with fines of up to 5 million rupees, or about 360 dollars, for anyone who “opt out”.
In addition to fines, the government is threatening to deny benefits to anyone who did not take the photo.
“The sanctions are our last effort to encourage the participation of the population,” said Siti Nadia Tarmizi, head of the Ministry of Health.
“Jakarta deputy governor Ahmad Riza Patria said the city authorities were just following the rules,” the report said.
The country is struggling to convince its predominantly Islamic population to take the vaccine, with polls indicating only 37% are ready to receive the vaccine.
Commenting on the decision to punish residents who fail to comply, Usman Hamid, director of Amnesty International Indonesia, said: “A general mandate on immunization, especially one that includes criminal sanctions, is a gross human rights violation. . ”
Remember when it comes here.
This two-tier social system based on vaccination status is the global model desired by the elite.
As we have already reported, starting next week Israel, one of the first countries to start vaccination, will allow Green Pass holders who took the photo to access public spaces, including sporting events, restaurants and hotels, while those that haven’t had the shot will remain locked.
