ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos repeatedly pressed Trump’s campaign adviser Jason Miller on Sunday morning over President Donald Trump’s baseless claims that doctors “make more money” from to coronavirus deaths, which prompted Miller to back the president’s claims by citing “unrelated things indicating that.”
Continuing to hammer home his closing argument that the country is ‘turning the corner’ on the pandemic despite record daily infections, Trump accused American doctors of profiting from the crisis by deliberately overcounting coronavirus deaths at a campaign rally in the end of last week.
“Our doctors get more money if someone dies from COVID. Do you know that’s true? “Trump exclaimed.” So what they do is they say, ‘I’m sorry, but, you know, everyone is dying from COVID.’ But in Germany and elsewhere, if you have a heart attack, or if you have cancer, you are terminally ill, you get COVID, you are said to have died of cancer, that you have died of an attack. With us, if in doubt, choose COVID. “
The president’s unproven attack was greeted with a scathing rebuke from the American Medical Association, which called Trump’s remarks “malicious, scandalous and completely wrong” while adding that he “should follow suit. science and urge public health compliance with the steps we know work. “
Interviewing Miller on ABC’s Sunday Show This weekStephanopoulos recapped the president’s inflammatory comments – which also featured Trump’s baseless claim that doctors were getting “an additional $ 2,000” for COVID diagnoses – before confronting Trump’s adviser to WADA’s response.
“Why does the president repeatedly attack doctors on the front lines saying they are inflating the COVID numbers?” Stephanopoulos wondered aloud.
“I don’t think he was attacking anyone at all,” Miller insisted. “I think he was talking about how most Americans want to reopen the country safely. Come back to work, come back to life normally. “
The ABC anchor quickly fired back, pointing out that “we all just saw it” and that Trump was speaking directly about medics inflating the coronavirus death toll for money.
“George, I’m not going to get into the billing aspects that there have been many reports of, there have been all kinds of unrelated things indicating that,” Miller replied. “The point is, people want their lives to get back to normal. They are tired of lockdowns. Look at Democratic-led states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. People are tired of lockdowns. “
“You repeat that,” retorted Stephanopoulus. “Do you think doctors are swelling COVID deaths for money?”
Miller, meanwhile, once again asserted – without evidence – that there are a “number of reports raised” that show doctors overestimate deaths for profit.
In a subsequent interview with Stephanopoulos, Biden’s campaign adviser Anita Dunn said she was “astonished” Miller would not stand up for medics who are on the front lines in fighting the pandemic.
“This tells you everything you need to know about the difference between the Trump campaign and the Biden campaign and between Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” she added. “Joe Biden respects frontline workers. He respects doctors. He respects Dr Fauci. He listens to scientists.
