Washington, DC residents react to National Guard presence ahead of Biden’s inauguration

Downtown Washington, DC, was largely a ghost town on Sunday, as tens of thousands of National Guard and law enforcement security personnel marched to the U.S. capital to reinforce security ahead of Wednesday’s presidential inauguration ceremony. Armed soldiers in camouflage uniforms held checkpoints in the city center, which was closed to traffic with large military vehicles deployed to block the streets. One resident said the situation was “troubling”, while another said people were struggling to get to town because of the blockades. The FBI and other federal agencies have warned of the potential for future violence leading to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden, as white supremacists and other extremists seek to exploit the frustration of Trump supporters who have subscribes to his false claims about electoral fraud.
