SpongeBob SquarePants was created by Stephen Hillenburg and launched in the summer of 1999. For the past 17 years, SpongeBob SquarePants has been the number 1 animated series for children on television. At the same time, it created a universe of popular characters, catchphrases and memes from pop culture, theatrical releases and consumer goods, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical and a worldwide fan base. The character-based cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of SpongeBob, an incurable optimist and serious sea sponge, and his underwater friends.
