HART member psychology professor Ellen Townsend appeared on Allison Pearson and Liam Halligan’s Planet Normal podcast to tell them how bad the lockdowns have been for children across the country.
For Professor Ellen Townsend, it’s simple: “We put adults first when we should put children first.” The result, according to the University of Nottingham, is “a real disaster” for young people and an approach she believes the country will regret, citing widely reported mental health issues and a sharp rise in youth unemployment.
Speaking to the Telegraph’s Planet Normal podcast, Professor Townsend explains to columnists and podcast hosts, Allison Pearson and Liam Halligan, why she thinks it is now vital for the government to implement a “inclusive recovery approach. trauma ”to get young people out of confinement. The focus, she says, should be on mental recovery rather than catching up with schoolwork: “If we don’t have mental health and well-being, learning just won’t happen. ” And a second plan is needed for the ‘morally questionable’ way in which she thinks the government has instigated fear in young people: ‘If I were to provoke any emotion in the lab, for example, I would ethically expect me to. make sure people left the lab feeling as good or better than they did when they arrived… I would have a plan to get out. What worries me about what happened is that there doesn’t seem to be an exit plan to defuse the fear. “
