For your average COO, a life spent living in the shadows on supposed identities and looking over his shoulder may seem like a far worse fate than a spell in a German prison.
But Jan Marsalek, 40, has never been an average COO. The former COO of Wirecard, a German payment processing giant that collapsed in June amid staggering $ 2.25 billion fraud allegations, is now believed to be living under a false identity in the former USSR.
Interpol claims Marsalek, who is Austrian by birth, is wanted for violating German securities trading laws, criminal breach of trust and “particularly serious fraud”. Three of his former management colleagues languish in German prisons accused of fraud, embezzlement and market manipulation, while a fourth was released on bail this week.
